Introducing Christian Bakalov: Artist

After studying at the Ballet School of Sofia Opera in Bulgaria, Christian Bakalov began his dance career in France in the Young Ballet of France and CCNN of Nantes.

Since 2009 he lives and works in Brussels where he participates in the opening of the independent performance space Volksroom directed by Ivo Dimchev. We know him especially as a performer of Ivo Dimchev , Jan Fabre and Miet Warlop but he has also participated in productions by Robert Wilson, Jérôme Bel and Florentina Holzinger & Vincent Riebeek.

In 2013 he began developing his first immersive performative installation BRIGHT, in which the audience plays the main role. Blurring the boundaries between performative action and installation, Bakalov develops a series of immersive methods to introduce the audience into a parallel universe.

The trilogy ETERNIA , inspired by Spinoza's concept of Eternityis produced and supported by ArtEast Foundation and Workspacebrussels.

In 2014, he developed BRIGHT, his first immersive installation, in which the audience plays the leading role. Immersed in vast dark spaces full of phosphorescent signs, the most banal and daily objects become enchanted and estranged. Blurring the boundaries between performative action and installation, Bakalov develops a series of methods to introduce the audience into a poetic universe by addressing them one-on-one through different senses. PURE is the second part of Bakalov’s trilogy inspired by Spinoza's conception of eternity. It is an ongoing artistic process that takes different shapes in each context. The third and last part of the trilogy, ETERNAL, was created in 2019.

In December 2021 we hosted Christian at our space the Steps, for which he created the immersive installation PURE STEPS.

"Five years ago, when I started working on the immersive visual installation PURE, I decided to create a unique experience, which would "speak" without words directly to the body and senses of each person and would ask an important and very personal question for me: "Do I perceive the world and the reality in which I live in a way as pure as my being?”
