GenerationArt: Haralambi Markov
05.10.2022CHAPTER I | Photography exhibition by Evgeni Kirilov
10.10.2022Single Step Foundation is pleased to invite you to the opening of Haralambi Markov's solo exhibition "Reconcilicceptance" on 19 October at 19:00h at The Steps community space at 12 Bratya Miladinovi Str.
The exhibition "Reconcilicceptance" is a story about existing as a queer person in a country that doesn't want you and can't even love you. History weighs and suffocates, and 'traditional Bulgarian values' stigmatise anyone who is not a perfect reflection of them. Each of us has to deal with the cultural past and nostalgia for other 'bright and normal' times, rewrite the narrative and re-create ourselves in our own image.
This exhibition represents an attempt in this endeavour, despite all the attacks on the rights and lives of queer people inside and outside Bulgaria in the last year.
Haralambi Markov is a non-binary Bulgarian short story writer, reviewer and editor working in the fantasy genres. He was the first Bulgarian to be accepted to attend the Clarion Writers' Workshop in 2014. His short story "The Language of Knives" was longlisted for the Nebula Award for Best Short Story in 2014. His work has appeared in TOR.com, Uncanny Magazine, Evil in Technicolor, Weird Fiction Review, Stories for Chip, Eurasian Monsters, and Lackington's. In 2021, he helped organize the BonFIYAH International Writers Conference, and this month he was featured in our GenerationArt column.
His work addresses themes around the transgressiveness of the corporeal, mental health, the occult and cosmic horror. He began his work in collaging as a way to address his frustration in working with texts. The underlying principle that guides his process is the tactile aspects of collages as a form of intuitive creation.
The exhibition is part of the three-year project "Empowering young LGBTI people through access to services, motivation and focused policy change", which is implemented with financial support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the EEA Financial Mechanism. The main objective of the project is to support and empower young LGBTI people and professionals working with them.
